# Projects

> Make a folder on your computer a project, so Dvina works in its files, and start that work from any device.

A project is a folder on your computer that Dvina works in: a code repository or a plain folder of documents. Choose a project for a chat, and Dvina reads and changes the files right there, on your own computer.

## How it works

Projects live on your computer, not in the cloud. You make them in the desktop app, and each one knows which computer its folder is on.

When a chat works in a project, Dvina uses that folder's files. On your other devices, you can pick the same project and ask for work; the work happens on the computer the folder is on. The files and their changes stay there.

> [!NOTE]
> The computer with the project needs to be on, with Dvina open.

## Make a project

Make projects in the desktop app on your Mac or Windows PC.

1. In the chat, open the Dock and choose the **Projects** row.
2. Choose **New Project…**.
3. Enter a **Name** and, under **Where**, choose the folder it goes in. It starts in **Documents**.
4. To keep a history of every change, turn on **Create Git repository**. Dvina's edits can then be undone.
5. Click **Create**.

To use a folder you already have, like an existing code repository, choose **Open…** instead and pick the folder.

The new project is chosen for the chat you made it from.

## Work in a project

1. Open the Dock and choose the **Projects** row. With no project chosen yet, it reads **Open Project**; otherwise it shows the project's name.
2. Choose a project. Each one shows where its folder is, like **On this computer** or the name of your other computer.
3. Ask for what you need, like "update the price list in the spreadsheet" or "fix the failing test."

To stop working in the project, choose it again.

The work you ask for in a project shows up on the project's page as tasks. To see all your projects, open your Feed and choose **Projects**.

## Use a project from another device

On your phone, on the web or on another computer, you can choose the project in the Dock and ask for work, and it runs on the computer the folder is on.

- **On a phone or the web:** The project's files and changes stay on your computer. To browse them, open the desktop app.
- **On another computer:** If the folder is somewhere else, Dvina says **This folder is on** that computer. Choose **Choose folder…** to pick where the project lives on this one.

If you move a project's folder, choose **Relocate…** and pick its new place.

## When to use

- You want Dvina to work in your code, on your own computer.
- You keep a folder of documents, like a client's files, and want Dvina to read and update them.
- You're away from your desk and want work done in a folder on your computer.

## Tips

- **Turn on Git for new projects.** With **Create Git repository** on, every change Dvina makes can be undone.
- **Can't open a folder on a Mac?** If Dvina says **Dvina can't open this folder**, choose **Open Settings** and allow Dvina to access it in System Settings, then try again.
- **Projects aren't shared.** A project is a folder on your computer. To work with others, share the files or tasks instead.
